Mileage clocking means altering or rolling back an odometer to show a lower mileage than the vehicle has actually covered. A lower recorded mileage typically increases a car's perceived value — which creates an incentive for dishonest sellers to manipulate the reading. MOT history provides one of the most reliable independent cross-checks available to a private buyer.

How MOT mileage records help

Every MOT test in the UK records the vehicle's odometer reading at the time of the test. These readings are held on national databases and create a mileage timeline that stretches across the life of the vehicle.

A timeline with consistent, steadily increasing readings that broadly match the asking price and the vehicle's apparent condition is a positive indicator. A timeline with gaps, sudden drops or figures that are inconsistent with the current displayed mileage is worth investigating.

Patterns worth checking

A single mileage entry in isolation tells you little. It is the pattern across multiple tests that matters.

  • A mileage decrease between two consecutive MOT entries — an odometer reading lower than the previous test — is unusual and unlikely to have a legitimate explanation
  • A long gap between MOT records combined with unexpectedly low mileage at the next test may indicate the vehicle was off the road, or it may indicate records are missing
  • A sudden large increase in annual mileage when the vehicle has consistently shown low figures may reflect a change in use — or it may indicate earlier readings were not reliable
  • Consistently very low annual mileage across many years can be genuine, but it is worth checking whether the vehicle's physical wear is consistent with such limited use

Why one unusual entry may be a recording error

Not every mileage discrepancy indicates deliberate clocking. MOT testers enter readings manually and genuine recording errors do occur. A single anomalous entry in an otherwise consistent, well-documented mileage history may be a data entry mistake.

The concern is a pattern rather than an isolated entry. A single minor discrepancy in a clean history is different from a picture of consistently lower-than-expected mileage, multiple unexplained gaps, or a recorded decrease at the point of sale.

How wear should support the claimed mileage

Physical wear on a vehicle should broadly agree with the mileage it claims to have covered. Wear patterns on the steering wheel rim, seat bolsters, driver's footwell carpet, pedal rubbers and gear knob tend to accumulate with use.

A vehicle displaying 30,000 miles on the odometer that shows heavy wear across all of these contact points is worth questioning. A vehicle that shows very little wear in proportion to its claimed mileage is also an unusual combination — though some cars are very well maintained.

Service invoices that record mileage at the time of each service provide a useful additional cross-reference. Where a seller has a full service history, check that the mileage figures recorded on service receipts agree with the MOT timeline.

How mileage affects value and maintenance

Higher mileage generally means more wear on mechanical components. Timing belts, clutches, brakes and suspension components all have expected replacement intervals measured partly in miles. A vehicle whose actual mileage is higher than recorded may be closer to these service points than the odometer suggests.

Mileage also directly affects a vehicle's trade and private sale value. A car presented with genuinely low mileage commands a premium — and if that figure has been adjusted, the buyer is paying for something the vehicle no longer is.

  • Do not assume deliberate clocking until the full pattern has been considered — recording errors do happen
  • Compare the full MOT mileage timeline against the current displayed odometer reading
  • Check whether any service invoices record mileage and whether those figures are consistent
  • Look at the physical wear on the vehicle and consider whether it agrees with the claimed mileage
  • Use terms such as 'recorded mileage discrepancy' or 'mileage inconsistency' rather than 'clocked' until the evidence is clear
